A beautiful Wedgwood biscuit barrel is part of a deceased estate. When the sealed top is removed by the new owner a wad of 100-year-old documents are found inside. One of the documents is a posthumous letter from an airman in the Royal Flying Corps in First World War France and sets off an investigation, the explosive results of which are revealed in the book. The book is set in 1914 Rhodesia and then moves to France and the killing fields of the Western Front.

This is a cleverly crafted tale based on facts. The author has used his imagination well, I liked the detailed descriptions introducing people and places, it reminded me of some of the British writers in the early 20th century who spent time painting word pictures in their stories. However, after introducing the main characters very well, they were not developed, and there were gaps in the story leaving me wishing I could know more about what had happened and why some people acted as they did.A good debut book and I hope the characters and events will be built upon in follow ups.

The Biscuit Barrel edition by David Slater Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews
Fantastic book!
The piece is 100% adventure and romance, that readers of different preferences can appreciate. Furthermore, this is the first book I have read that does an exceptionally entertaining job of incorporating fiction in Southern Africa, skillfully integrating historical events and the numerous cultural nuances of the region.
The book is easy to read, capturing sufficient details and background with consistency, without overwhelming the reader, as is common with other fictional texts. It would be great if a series of books could be written in the Southern African region (Rhodesia/Zimbabwe, Mozambique, South Africa) with similar characters in The Biscuit Barrel.
Most importantly, the book is unique in that there are no cliches, as are common in the majority of mainstream books being written today. This book is a great read and sure to win your heart and call you to visit Africa!
This is a very compelling story. Anyone who has experience in Zimbabwe or South Africa will relate to the local references. Bravo. I'm looking forward to the author's next book.
I had just returned from a month in Africa when I read this novel and found it to be a fascinating story. The Biscuit Barrel provides the reader with an insightful look into life in various parts of colonial Africa at the onset of the First World War. Told through the eyes of a young English police officer who has taken a position in southern Africa, it also provides an interesting take on policing in the early part of the 20th century as well as the impact that the Great War had on both the participants and their families. And if the history doesn't interest you, there's still plenty of action and romance to keep you entertained! The pace of the novel never flags as the first-time author keeps things moving along with great enthusiasm for his subject matter. An easy and enjoyable read.
Enjoyable story-line, seemed at stages, that a different person was writing the story. Writing needs to mature and consolidate before becoming a master
